Children Centres and Employment

05 November 2007

Derwentside Employment Team have developed a relationship with Sure Start and their Children’s Centres which brings support to those who need it most.

Bringing up children doesn’t have to stop people working. Together Sure Start and DET have helped many residents of Derwentside find a job that fits around family life.

On the last Friday of every month, Martina, an Employment Adviser with DET, is available at Catchgate Children’s Centre, 10am-12.00noon for anyone to drop in and discuss the possibility of finding and returning to work.

On 6th October DET exhibited at the launch of the Burnhope Children’s Centre to support this welcome addition to the community and to promote our services to the people of Burnhope.

Lara said “It was a really nice day; I think people felt comfortable talking to us about what we do in a friendly environment”

There was a lot of interest on the day and DET is currently working with a number of people who have asked for help to get back to work.

Working with Employers to find the right people! Karen Johnson from Stanley became anxious about the chances of ever getting back to work but Derwentside Employment Team (DET) stepped in at just the right time and found an excellent opportunity with a Consett based company, Durham Legal Services.

Taking Stock! Stewart Whyte from the Green Corridor area of Stanley works part time in the Warehouse at Wilkinson’s’ unloading wagons and taking in deliveries, it’s a far cry from his management position in the finance industry but happiness comes in small packages and Stewart is certainly a happier man these days.
