Taking Stock!
Stewart Whyte from the Green Corridor area of Stanley works part time in the Warehouse at Wilkinson’s’ unloading wagons and taking in deliveries, it’s a far cry from his management position in the finance industry but happiness comes in small packages and Stewart is certainly a happier man these days.
Two years ago Stewart’s father died, and after suffering a stroke and a double hernia himself Stewart found he could no longer cope, becoming ill with depression and anxiety. Having always been a man with a strong work ethic, Stewart had struggled through but a severe relapse left him with no choice but to leave his job.
A claim to Incapacity Benefit put him in contact with Mark Malone a Specialist Advisor from Stanley Jobcentre Plus. Stewart said “I always wanted to go back to work but knew I wasn’t ready, Mark was very good, there was no pressure and he made it very clear that I wasn’t going to be forced back to work” he added “It was at this point that I realised I couldn’t do it by myself, I never wanted help but eventually I gave in it was the best thing I ever did”
Mark referred Stewart to Derwentside Employment Team last year and it was here that Stewart started on our Confidence and Self Esteem Course delivered by Gary, True Potential “Gary was great he taught me breathing and listening techniques and how to empty your mind” Stewart added “It just gives your brain a break!”
The coping mechanisms learnt through this workshop gave Stewart the momentum and confidence to consider work seriously again. Martina, an adviser with Derwentside Employment Team helped Stewart search and apply for suitable jobs.
Stewart explained, “Martina was very open and approachable; it gives me great piece of mind that she is still there to help me even while I’m in work”.
Kay Armstrong, Manager of Wilkinsons, “Stewart joined us in Chester le Street in May 2008, he has a very bubbly personality which has fitted well in our store and he also strives to do a good job. We have recognised he has been through a great deal over the last few years and we are pleased to be able to give him the opportunity to get back into employment”
